Welcome back!
Let’s get crocheting. If you have worked through the single crochet tutorial, then you are ready for your first project! The perfect project for crochet beginners is the Simple Twist Headband. It allows you to practice (repetition, repetition, repetition) your single crochet technique until you could do it in your sleep. It also incorporates some basic piecing together, and voila! you have a finished, useful item that you can use, or gift. The twist technique used in this project can be used with just about any crochet stitched headband, giving a basic headband the look of something more complex.
The first component of making the Simple Twist Headband is to crochet a foundation single crochet piece that can be used as either a headband or ear warmer. This foundation headband is used in both the Simple Twist Earwarmer and the Round & Round Headband (pattern coming soon).
To begin, you will need your materials.
For simplicity purposes I recommend using similar weight, or ply, yarn and the same hook size as I will be using, so that you get similar measurements for your completed item.
I am using Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky yarn, and a J (5.75mm) hook. Also required will be a yarn, or tapestry, needle and scissors.
The terminology used in crochet can feel like you’re learning a new language. The terms used in this tutorial are US crochet terms. They are abbreviated as follows:
ch= chain
sc= single crochet
st= stitch
The gauge (or tension) of your crochet is worked out as follows: a crocheted segment with 11 stitches in a row by 14 rows should measure 8.5c wide and 10cm long (3.35 inches wide by 4 inches long). If your stitch segment measures similar to these measurements, then you’re tension is accurate for making the headband the same size as detailed in the pattern.
A video tutorial is included- click here– if you learn best with a video.
The Pattern
Step 1. Chain 13.
Step 2. sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea ch for remainder of row. There should be 11 stitches in your row. The number of stitches are indicated in brackets at the end of each step. (11)
Step 3. Ch 1. sc in first st. sc in ea st for row. (11).
Step 4. Repeat step 3 until desired length achieved. Remember the item will stretch slightly, and you do not want the headband to be a loose fit, or it will slip down the forehead.
Once the desired length is achieved the simple headband can be made into the Simple Twist Headband, or using some double crochet and crocheting in the round skills we can form the Round & Round Headband.
Creating the Twist
Position ends overlapping, with main part of headband laying flat together. Fold overlapping ends over.
Secure sewing yarn strand through one side. Insert needle through first loop of stitch, and through each of the four layers. Pull needle and yarn through all four levels, joining layers together.
Continue stitching through all four layers at each stitch loop. Repeat stitching back again, to ensure stitching secure.
Sew in yarn end once stitching complete. Turn headband in right way and your twist is complete.
